C. Sahara & Sahel

The Sahara Desert covers 9,400,000 square kilometers and passes through 11 countries: Algeria, Libya, Chad, Morocco, Western Sahara, Tunisia, Egypt, Mali, Niger, Sudan, and Mauritania. It was named after the Arabic word for desert, "Sahra." By 3400 B.C the Sahel was as dry as it is today. The first people to settle the Sahara were the Egyptians in 6000.
