Three Religions of Southwest Asia





Christianity





 Christianity is a major world-wide religion that believes in one god (monotheistic). This religion was started by Jesus Of Nazareth (Also called Jesus Christ) when he started preaching about God around 30 A.D. A believer/follower of Christianity is often called a Christian. Christians often pray at a Church on Sundays. Their holy book is called the Bible and it is made up of the Old Testament and the New Testament.  Christians believe in the Trinity,the Trinity is the belief that God is split into three parts; God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Christians believe that God made an agreement (Covenant) with Abraham stating that God’s chosen people will live in now modern day Israel. However they were supposed to be faithful and obedient in order to stay in modern day Israel. Christians also believe in the 10 laws that God created also called the Ten Commandments. Christianity is split into three main divisions; Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant.


 Islam



Islam is a major world-wide religion that believes in one god (monotheistic). This religion was started by Muhammad around 610 A.D, they believe that Muhammad started receiving messages from God and later were written in the Muslim Holy Book. A believer/follower of Islam is often called a Muslim. Muslims often pray in a Mosque on Fridays. Their holy book is called the Qur’an/Quran/Koran (it can be spelled three ways). They also believe that God made a covenant with Abraham. Muslims believe that in order to achieve salvation/success Muslims must take part of the five basic practices called the “five pillars”. Islam is split into two main divisions; The Sunni and the Shia.


Judaism




Judaism is a major world-wide religion that believes in one god (monotheistic). This religion was started by Abraham around 4,000 years ago. Around that time people believed in many gods, however Abraham only believed in one powerful god. A believer/follower of Judaism is called a Jew. Jews pray in a synagogue on Saturdays. Their holy book is called the Torah. They also believe that God made an agreement with Abraham stating that God’s chosen people will live in modern day Israel . However they too were expected to be faithful and obedient. Jews also believe in the 10 laws that God created also called the Ten Commandments. Judaism is split into three divisions Orthodox, Reformed, and Conservative.
